Amid the Federal funding crisis, Elon Musk says as this is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans, I offer to pay salaries of …

As the federal funding lapse continues to leave thousands of airport security stand unpaid, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has now offered to personally cover the salaries of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel.

In a post shared on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) Musk wrote, “I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country.” His message framed the issue as a nationwide problem affecting air travel rather than a localized disruption.

Airports offer emergency support

The shutdown has already forced the airports to step in with the support measures.

The Denver International Airport has now requested donations of $10 and $20 grocery and gas cards for TSA employees, while Seattle-Tacoma International set up an on-site pantry stocked with food, hygiene supplies, and diapers for TSA and Customs staff. Along with this, the airport officials also noted that same kind of efforts were made during the previous shutdowns, with local businesses contributing meals and discounts.

Airline CEOs and industry leaders have urged Congress to act, warning that unpaid TSA officers, Customs clearance staff, and air traffic controllers pose risks to both national security and travel operations. Their open letter called on lawmakers to pass measures like the Aviation Funding Solvency Act and Keep America Flying Act, which would guarantee pay for aviation workers during shutdowns.

Impact of the shutdown on travellers

Due to the shutdown, the passengers also already experiencing longer waits and also unpredictable checkpoint staffing.

Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport advised travelers to arrive two to three hours early, while New Orleans and Houston Hobby reported waits exceeding two hours. Programs like TSA PreCheck and Global Entry have also been disrupted, and TSA confirmed that more than 300 officers have resigned since the shutdown began. The gap in the funding is related to the disputes over immigration enforcement which started around February 13.

The Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also warned that the lapse will pose a threat to national security. The present crisis also echoes a previous 43-day shutdown that left nearly 900,000 federal workers unpaid and reduced GDP by an estimated $7–14 billion.Musk’s offer comes as airlines brace for a heavy spring travel surge, with 171 million passengers expected over two months, up 4% from last year. Whether his intervention will be accepted remains uncertain, but the gesture underscores the urgency of finding legislative solutions to ensure essential aviation workers are compensated during funding impasses.
