Dual substations for uninterrupted power to Noida airport

The airport’s current power demand is 6 MVA

Noida: The power department has put in place a dual substation arrangement to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to the Noida International Airport ahead of commercial flight operations.According to Vivek Kumar Patel, superintending engineer (technical) at the Noida power department PVVNL, the airport’s power supply, currently at 6 MVA through substations in sectors 18 and 32 of the Yamuna Authority area, will be scaled up to 20 MVA and eventually 93 MVA through two dedicated 220 kV substations. The dual-line setup ensures power can be rerouted through another line if one line fails. A quick response team has also been put on standby for any power-related emergencies.“By 2027, the power supply is expected to reach 93 MVA, reflecting the airport’s anticipated growth,” Patel said.A specialised Quick Response Team (QRT) has been established to further enhance reliability. This team will address any power-related challenges at the airport. The power department also has plans to set-up a 400kV substation in Sector 32 along the Ymauna Expressway to meet the future power demands of the airport.

The substation will be built by Tata Power Company Limited in a public-private partnership (PPP).“We are monitoring and have prioritised the power requirements at the Jewar airport and expect a seamless supply once operations start,” said Sanjay Kumar Jain, chief engineer, Noida power department.According to power department officials, the airport’s overall power demand is expected to be around 95 MW by 2030. So far, plans have been put in place to provide 93 MW supply in the future.
