Fast-track court begins daily hearings in Zubeen case

Guwahati: The fast-track sessions court set up by the Gauhati High Court for day-to-day trial proceedings in Zubeen Garg’s death case held its first hearing on Monday.Counsel for arrested singer Amritprava Mahanta made submissions before Justice Sharmila Bhuyan, while the lawyers for two other accused — Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddhartha Sharma — will present their cases on Tuesday.Zubeen Garg, 52, died in Singapore on Sept 19. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had described the incident in the assembly as ‘plain and simple murder’. An SIT of Assam Police’s CID later filed a chargesheet naming seven accused, four of whom face murder charges. Special public prosecutor Ziaul Kamar said the court had taken details of the prosecution’s case.Zubeen’s wife Garima Saikia Garg welcomed the fast-track process. “The hearing will now be held daily in the morning and afternoon. We have hope that the proceedings will move fast with a good outcome expected soon,” she said. While Assam authorities have pressed murder charges, the Singapore coroner recently ruled that Zubeen’s death was “simply due to an unfortunate and tragic accidental drowning.”
