Joey Barton will not be leaving jail anytime soon. The former England footballer has been refused bail after being charged with a serious assault near a golf club in Merseyside. The decision came days after a man was left badly hurt and taken to hospital.

The court heard that the victim, Kevin Lynch, is still in hospital with injuries to his face and ribs. Doctors say he is stable, but there are fears he could lose sight in one eye. Because of how serious the case is, Barton has been kept in custody until his next hearing on April 7 at Liverpool Crown Court.The incident has raised concern locally, especially after reports of a heavy police presence at the golf club. Officers also asked nearby residents for any footage or information that could help the case.

The case was heard at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court, where Judge David Potter decided that Joey Barton should stay in custody. Barton, who is charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm, had applied for bail but the request was turned down.Prosecutor Chelsea Kearns told the court that Kevin Lynch, 51, had been drinking with Barton and others at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on March 8. What started as a normal evening quickly turned tense.

She said the two men got into a “heated discussion” before things turned physical. They later went outside, where a witness claimed they saw a man being “punched, kicked and stamped on.”During the alleged attack, Barton is said to have told Lynch, “You should have behaved.” Lynch was later taken to hospital with serious injuries. The court was told his condition is stable, but the damage to his eye could be permanent.

Another man, Gary O’Grady, 50, has also been charged in connection with the same incident. However, unlike Barton, he has been released on bail.Police had earlier sealed off parts of the area around the golf club. Locals reported seeing officers gathering evidence and speaking to witnesses. Doorbell camera footage was also requested as part of the investigation.Joey Barton, now 42, had a long football career. He started at Manchester City in 2002 and made 150 appearances. He later played for Newcastle United, Queens Park Rangers, Marseille, Burnley, and Rangers.He also earned one cap for England in 2007. After retiring, he moved into management with roles at Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers. Now, his focus is on the legal battle ahead, with the next court date set for April 7.
