Adar, on the other hand, is the CEO and owner of the Serum Institute of India. His daily life involves the heavy lifting of global health logistics and managing a multi-billion-dollar empire. You wouldn’t necessarily expect the “Vaccine King” and the “Couture Queen” to be on the same wavelength, but their partnership is proof that the most solid foundations in life are often built in the most unexpected places. As per reports, Adar Poonawalla met Natasha in the early 2000s at Vijay Mallya’s famous New Year’s Eve bash in Goa. Natasha had just wrapped up her Master’s at the London School of Economics and was enjoying her first “parent-free” trip to Goa.

While the rest of the crowd was lost in the whirlwind of music and drinks, Natasha and Adar found themselves tallking to each other at the party. Recalling their first meeting, Natasha told Vogue India in an earlier interview, “We didn’t really drink or party. We got to know each other and laughed a lot. I told him, ‘We’re going to be really good friends.’”

It wasn’t a “thunderbolt” moment of love at first sight, but something better: an instant, comfortable vibe. He was the grounded heir; she was the sharp-witted rebel. Somehow, without the flashiness usually associated with their circles, the puzzle pieces just clicked.

The honeymoon phase was immediately tested by geography. Natasha headed back to London to build her career, while Adar was shoulder-deep in the family business in Pune. When Natasha entered the Poonawalla household, she didn’t just join a family; she entered a powerhouse. Her father-in-law, Cyrus Poonawalla, took a radical approach for a traditional Indian patriarch: he gave her a seat at the table from day one.

She wasn’t expected to just be a “trophy wife” hosting dinner parties. She was encouraged to participate, eventually taking the lead at the Villoo Poonawalla Charitable Foundation. For the unversed, Natasha is the Chairperson of the foundation, which was started in the memory of her late mother-in-law. Natasha is also the Executive Director of SII.
