NFL Free Agency: Stefon Diggs future takes dramatic turn amid legal uncertainty

Stefon Diggs’ future has quietly become one of the more intriguing subplots of this offseason. The former Buffalo Bills receiver is still without a team after his brief stint with the New England Patriots ended following their Super Bowl run.

At 32, and coming off a strong return from injury, Diggs remains productive enough to help a contender. Yet uncertainty around his situation has slowed interest. Now, a familiar possibility is beginning to surface, one that could take him back to where his NFL journey first began with the Minnesota Vikings.

Stefon Diggs Could Return to His First NFL City

There is logic behind the idea. Garrett Podell recently pointed to Minnesota as a realistic landing spot, especially given how Diggs performed last season.

Despite concerns over a previous ACL injury, he delivered numbers that demand attention.“Diggs was an integral piece for the 2025 AFC champions,” Podell wrote. “At the age of 32 and fresh off a torn ACL, Diggs led the Patriots with 1,013 yards receiving and four touchdowns on 85 catches. His 83.3% catch rate was the second-highest catch rate by a wide receiver in the past 45 seasons, according to CBS Sports Research. Only New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas’ 85% catch rate in 2018 was higher than what Diggs produced in 2025.

That level of efficiency is hard to ignore. It also strengthens the case for a return to Minnesota, where Diggs spent his first five seasons after being drafted in 2015. The Vikings now have a gap in their receiving unit following Jalen Nailor’s exit, sitting behind established names like Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison.“If Diggs’ legal process is resolved, a homecoming to the Minnesota Vikings makes plenty of sense,” Podell wrote.Still, the situation is layered. Lingering legal concerns tied to an alleged incident remain unresolved, and that uncertainty continues to cloud decision-making for teams. There is also history to consider. Diggs’ departure from Minnesota was not entirely smooth, though the current setup is very different now, both in leadership and direction.Elsewhere, the Bills have already moved on. Their shift to a spread offense in 2024 brought balance, but inconsistency crept in last season. Quarterback Josh Allen often found himself under pressure as receivers struggled to separate. The arrival of DJ Moore offers fresh hope, and a possible return for Brandin Cooks could further stabilize the group. For Diggs, the next move feels personal as much as professional. A return to Minnesota would not just fill a roster need. It would close a circle that has remained open for years.
