NHL insider Elliotte Friedman drops bold hint on Auston Matthews future with Maple Leafs entering crucial offseason crossroads

The Toronto Maple Leafs are heading into a defining offseason, and the future of Auston Matthews is no longer a quiet certainty. With only a few games left in a disappointing 2025–26 campaign, the focus has shifted from salvaging the present to shaping what comes next.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman believes the organization may take a patient, measured approach, allowing the early part of next season to dictate bigger decisions. It is not panic, but it is not stability either. It feels like a franchise waiting for clarity.

Auston Matthews future tied to Maple Leafs’ early-season response

Elliotte Friedman, speaking on his April 3 episode, suggested the Maple Leafs may resist making any immediate, dramatic calls on Auston Matthews. Instead, they could take a step back and reassess once the next season begins.“This is my theory, it’s purely my theory based on what I heard this week, is they’re gonna tell him, ‘We’re back on track next year or trying to be, and come back at the start of the year, and let’s see how it goes.’” Friedman said. That approach reflects a broader shift across the league. Friedman pointed to how the Vancouver Canucks handled Quinn Hughes as a recent example. Vancouver waited, evaluated, and then made a decisive move once their season slipped away, eventually dealing Hughes to the Minnesota Wild.

“Like, I think the Quinn Hughes thing, every player in that league, every team in that league saw how the Quinn Hughes thing played out this year,” Friedman said. “And that is that you start the year, you see how it goes, and then if it goes off the rails, you adjust as necessary.“We’ll see. I could be wrong about that. But that’s my theory right now.”The context behind this uncertainty is hard to ignore. Toronto’s season unraveled quickly, ending with their elimination on April 2 after a loss to San Jose.

It snapped a nine-year playoff streak and marked the first time a Matthews-led team missed the postseason.

At 32–31–14, the numbers tell part of the story. Defensive issues lingered all year, and the offseason departure of Mitch Marner left a gap that never quite closed. Matthews’ own campaign ended early with a torn MCL, removing the team’s most reliable presence when they needed him most.Still, Auston Matthews remains central to everything. His contract runs through 2027–28, carrying both financial weight and a full no-move clause.

That limits flexibility, but it also underlines his importance.Toronto now sits in a delicate position. The front office must decide whether to recommit fully or stay open to a different path. For now, the plan appears simple. Wait, watch, and let the next season speak before making a decision that could reshape the franchise.
