Dogs have traditionally been famous for their ability to produce the most expressive howls. They often join in whenever they hear music or sirens.However, recent scientific research suggests that these canines might be more than just making noise; in fact, they might be “singing” in tune.
Scientists have found that certain breeds of dogs can actually mimic the tones of the sounds they hear. They can even adjust their howling in such a way that it changes with the music. This is not only interesting; it is also a way of looking at the emotional and evolutionary link between music, canines, and their ancestors.
Dogs singing on pitch : What the research reveals
In one study done on breeds such as the Samoyeds and Shiba Inus, it was discovered that certain breeds can actually control the pitch of their howling with great precision.
The study revealed that these breeds were able to adjust their vocalisations in such a way that they matched the pitch of the songs being played for them. Scientific research at Seoul NationalUniversity found that the sounds of dogs can be examined using quantifiable parameters such as frequency, time, and changes in pitch.In fact, it was discovered that dogs can be quite sensitive to changes in pitch in both animal voices and human speech. A study done in Animal Cognition found that the responses of dogs vary when the pitch or tone of the voices is altered.This capacity to hear changes in pitch might be the reason why some can “sing along” with music. They might not simply be responding; instead, they might be making changes in their voices in response to the music.
Why do dogs howl along to music
The link between dogs and music is often explained through their ancestry. Howling is an essential mode of communication for dogs, inherited from wolves. It helps them find members of their pack and develop social connections.
