OpenAI has issued a precautionary advisory for users of its macOS applications, asking them to update to the latest versions following a security issue linked to a third-party developer tool. The company said the concern stems from a vulnerability involving Axios, a tool used during development, which was part of a broader industry incident. While the wording may sound alarming, OpenAI has been careful to emphasise what did not happen: there is no evidence of user data being accessed, no breach of its systems, and no compromise of its software.“We are updating our security certifications, which will require all macOS users to update their OpenAI apps to the latest versions.
This helps prevent any risk—however unlikely—of someone attempting to distribute a fake app that appears to be from OpenAI,” said OpenAI.
Why this urgency from OpenAI
At the core of the update is how OpenAI certifies its Mac apps as legitimate. The company is refreshing these security certifications to reduce even the smallest risk of malicious actors distributing fake versions of apps that appear authentic. In practical terms, this is less about fixing something broken and more about tightening the verification layer that ensures users are running genuine software,OpenAI said it identified exposure in a GitHub Actions workflow involved in the macOS app-signing process.
“Because the exposed workflow was related to macOS app signing, we are proactively rotating the notarization and code signing material used for OpenAI macOS applications. Updating ensures you are running versions signed with our latest certificate,” explained the company. The update applies across OpenAI’s macOS ecosystem, including ChatGPT, Codex, Atlas and Codex CLI. Users are being nudged to install the latest versions “out of an abundance of caution,” a phrase companies typically reserve for low-probability but high-impact scenarios. There is also a clear deadline attached. After May 8, older versions of these apps may stop functioning altogether. That effectively turns this from a recommendation into a requirement for anyone relying on these tools daily. “Effective May 8, 2026, older versions of our macOS desktop apps will no longer receive updates or support, and may not be functional,” said OpenAI.
What it means for ChatGPT users on Mac
For users, the takeaway is straightforward. Update the apps, verify you’re on the latest version, and move on. There’s no indication of active exploitation, but the cost of ignoring the update could be losing access altogether once older builds are deprecated.
