West Asia war effect: Propane gas crisis pushes JSR industrial units to opt for PNG

New Delhi, March 29 (IANS) As many as 6,000 PNG consumers have now surrendered their LPG connections in order to make more LPG available to those who do not have access to piped natural gas amid the disruption in supplies due to the Iran war, a top Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry official said on Sunday

Jamshedpur: A shortage of propane gas supply due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia has prompted several industries in the city to shift to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) as an alternative fuel to keep their operations running.“Propane is the primary fuel for most plants operating in this industrial city,” Gauri Shankar Mishra, general manager, GAIL Jamshedpur said. The Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) installed a PNG facility on a war footing at the Tata Motors plant in Jamshedpur, completing the work in a record 24 hours on Wednesday evening.“Tata Motors was facing issues due to the shortage of propane gas. Company officials approached us for PNG on an urgent basis.

Our team worked round the clock to lay the gas pipeline and initiate supply,” said Mishra on Thursday. GAIL will supply 25,000 standard cubic metres per day (SCMPD) of natural gas to the automobile manufacturer. In addition, the company has signed agreements to supply 20,000 SCMPD of PNG to Tata Steel and 5,000 SCMPD to Timken India’s Jamshedpur plant, which manufactures roller bearing units for Vande Bharat trains.

GAIL will also supply 3,000 SCMPD of natural gas to Tata Steel Downstream Products Ltd (TSDPL) at Bara, Agrico, and 500 SCMPD to Tata AutoComp Systems, a subsidiary of Tata Motors located within the Telco plant. “We expect to complete pipeline installation work for these units within the next 7 to 10 days,” Mishra said.“Amid the shortage, companies are shifting to PNG. In the coming weeks, several industries are expected to install natural gas connections. PNG helps reduce carbon emissions and ensures a reliable energy supply. We aim to supply one lakh SCMPD of natural gas to industrial units in the city by mid-May,” he added.
