Wife, 2 others held for Godda man’s murder

Dumka: Three men were arrested for allegedly hacking a 32-year-old man to death in a village under Mahagama police station limits of Godda district late last month, the police said on Monday.

The deceased Amit Modi, who ran a betel shop, was hacked to death on the intervening hours of Jan 27 and Jan 28 in Mangan-Pipra village.A special investigation team (SIT) formed by Godda SP Mukesh Kumar arrested Modi’s wife Soni Devi and two other residents of the same village, Mohammad Shahin Alam and Vijendra Paswan, after using technical and human intelligence. Soni’s wife was the prime accused and the three confessed to the crime.Godda subdivisional police officer Chandrashekhar Azad, who led the SIT, said Soni was in a relationship with Amit’s brother for nearly five years. “The duo wanted to kill Amit so that they could marry. They first hired Mohammad Shahin Alam for eliminating Amit and paid him Rs 1 lakh. Alam later roped in Vijendra Paswan for Rs 25,000 to commit the crime,” Azad said. While Rohit is still absconding, the trio have confessed to their crimes during questioning.

The murder weapon, a gandasa (a kind of sickle), was also seized from them, he further said.“On Jan 27 night, Shahin lured Amit out of his wife on the pretext of consuming liquor in presence of his wife. Later, he fatally attacked Amit in an abandoned area in the village. Then, Amit’s body was dumped near a graveyard with the help of Virendra. Soni switched off Amit’s mobile and threw it in the river to hide the evidence,” the SDPO said.
