The Cleveland Browns have yet to settle on a starting quarterback, but the early signals around Shedeur Sanders suggest the franchise is quietly shaping its future around him. After a rookie season that raised as many questions as it answered, Sanders returned to voluntary minicamp this week and immediately took first-team reps.
That alone does not lock in his role, but it does reveal intent. With the 2026 draft approaching, Cleveland’s next moves could say more about Sanders than any public endorsement.
Are the Browns building the roster around Shedeur Sanders?
Shedeur Sanders’ numbers from last season were uneven. He completed 56.6% of his passes for 1,400 yards, with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Those figures point to a player still finding his footing, but they do not tell the whole story.
Protection issues and a thin supporting cast often left him exposed. Now, under head coach Todd Monken, the tone appears to be shifting.
At minicamp, Sanders spoke openly about the change inside the building. “They’re going to understand and embrace you just as a person, and then they push you each and every day in the meeting room, on the field, in the weight room,” he said. “It’s a new vibe, a new energy.”He did not stop there. Turning toward the media, Sanders added, “We need y’all to have a new vibe, a new energy.
I know y’all want us to win, so we need a winning energy here. We can’t have too much negativity going on. We want the players to be the best version of ourselves for y’all.”That confidence has not gone unnoticed. While Sanders continues to split reps with Deshaun Watson, the early workload hints at a genuine competition, not just a formality.
Will Cleveland’s 2026 draft picks define Shedeur Sanders’ future?
The next step is roster support, and this is where the Browns’ draft strategy comes into focus.
Speaking on ESPN, Dan Orlovsky laid out a direct path forward. “I think those two first-round pick should be left tackle and wide receiver,” Orlovsky said. “If the Browns want to truly gauge what Shedeur Sanders is, you gotta improve the protection and skill players.”
Cleveland holds the No. 6 and No. 24 picks, though trade interest in the top selection remains active. Even with a move down, the team is expected to stay in range for impact offensive talent.
Among the names linked to the Browns are Makai Lemon, Carnell Tate and Jordyn Tyson. Any of them would offer Shedeur Sanders a more reliable target and help stabilize an offense that lacked rhythm last season.For now, Cleveland is keeping its options open.
