70 special buses to be run from Coimbatore to Chennai; 898 to other districts

COIMBATORE: The transport department will operate 70 special buses to Chennai and 898 buses to other districts on Sunday to facilitate the return of people who had travelled to their native places to cast their votes in the April 23 assembly election.Transport department principal secretary Shunchonngam Jatak Chiru, IAS, conducted an inspection in Coimbatore on Saturday to review arrangements for the post-election and weekend rush of passengers. An official review meeting was held at the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Coimbatore) headquarters, where officials discussed arrangements for passengers returning to Coimbatore from Madurai, Trichy, Theni, Dindigul and Salem after casting their votes.Officials were instructed to operate additional night services from Singanallur bus stand to Gandhipuram and Ukkadam to ease congestion.

The principal secretary reviewed bus arrangements for passengers travelling from Mettupalayam to Ooty and those arriving in Gandhipuram from Erode, Salem and Karur.On April 22, ahead of polling day, passengers at Gandhipuram, Singanallur and Saibaba Colony bus stands faced severe inconvenience as massive crowds waited for nearly five hours to travel to other districts due to inadequate bus services from Coimbatore city.
