5 ‘jokes’ that may damage your marriage
Having a good sense of humor is incredibly important, especially in romantic relationships. While a well-timed laugh can defuse tension and strengthen bonds, some may invite trouble. Not all jokes land equally, and some can leave lasting scars. Though being able to have fun and laugh with your partner is important, there is a line between harmless jokes and hurtful humor. Here are some ‘jokes’ that should never enter your home.

2/6
The ‘divorce’ joke
Divorce is a serious subject. It should not be taken lightly. Do not use the word, even for light banter. Seemingly harmless jokes, like ‘one more thing and I’m out of here’ or ‘that’s going straight to the divorce lawyer’ should not be normalised. Even if you laugh while delivering it, this will plant the seed of doubt in your relationship. Your partner will start to wonder if you’re only half-joking, or if you’re already thinking about exit strategies.

3/6
Insults disguised as sarcasm
When you are in a long-term relationship, you get comfortable. That comfort will slowly start to blur the line between joking and insulting. Seemingly harmless comments, like ‘Oh, you’re so smart. You forgot our anniversary again,’ or ‘You should be a chef. You make the best burned toast’ – are insults wrapped in humor. This kind of criticism creates emotional distance. If you really have a bone to pick with your partner, it is best to address it honestly, rather than weaving it into sarcasm. You should not use sarcasm as a weapon.

4/6
Jokes about family
The best way to drift apart? Making jokes about your partner’s family. Keep your partner’s family out of your jokes. Mocking their mother’s job, father’s temper, or sibling’s creative choice is going to cost you your relationship. Making these jokes will turn you into an outsider. It will slowly lead to resentment, even if your partner laughs in the moment.

5/6
Comments aimed at the body
Your freedom ends where their nose begins. Repeat this. Making ill comments on your partner’s physical appearance will ruin the relationship. Forget about the relationship, it’s 2026, and body shaming has not been in vogue since forever. So stop making jokes about your partner’s weight, age, or attractiveness. No matter how playfully you deliver it, such comments will hurt your partner. They will replay these comments during quiet moments, wondering if you find them less attractive. This will also shatter their confidence.

6/6
Comparison with others
Do not compare your partner or your relationship with others. We are all unique. Keep that in mind. Comments like ‘Did you see what her husband gifted her?’ or ‘Oh, why can’t you be like her?’ will create a painful hierarchy. Though you may deliver it as a joke, it will tell your partner that they are not quite enough. This comparison will ruin your bond and create emotional distance over time.
Humor is meant to lift your mood, not tear down your relationship. So, keep these five things in mind before you deliver the wit.
