The fallout was swift and decisive. Crissy Froyd is no longer associated with USA Today after comments she made about fellow journalist Dianna Russini triggered a professional storm.
The decision came as tensions in NFL media circles were already running high, following Russini’s resignation from The Athletic amid a widely discussed controversy involving Mike Vrabel. What began as a response on social media quickly turned into a life-changing event. Froyd’s comments, which were blunt and unapologetic, got a lot of attention. USA Today cut ties within days, saying they were worried about professionalism and ethics.
Since then, the situation has sparked debate about who is responsible, how the media should act, and where the lines between personal opinion and professional duty should be drawn.
Inside Crissy Froyd’s firing after explosive remarks on Dianna Russini
USA Today confirmed its stance in a clear statement: “USA TODAY Sports has ended its contractor relationship with Crissy Froyd effective immediately. Her recent statements do not reflect our commitment to professionalism or uphold our principles of ethical conduct,” the outlet said.
Froyd, however, did not retreat. Speaking to Page Six, she stood firm: “I want to say firstly that I do not regret anything that I said and that I stand behind the fact it is all indeed true.”Her comments were directed at Russini shortly after the latter’s resignation. Froyd wrote, “I’m sure you were told to submit this or that you’d get fired instead. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out,” and added, “We know who you really are and what you’ve been up to for years,” claiming it “does so much detriment to women in sports who have done things the right way.”She continued her criticism, stating, “It is almost certainly all true,” and described the situation as “the worst kept secret in the NFL reporting world for a while.”Even as the backlash grew, Froyd emphasized her conviction. “I want to thank USA TODAY SMG for the incredible run I had there for about half of my life. It is deeply, deeply emotional to me that this relationship has come to an end and that my contract has been terminated because of this.”
She added, “I would never say anything I didn’t stand behind because I know the potential consequences, even if a situation seems risky,” and expressed gratitude to those who supported her.In later remarks, she admitted the personal toll, saying she was “beyond distraught,” yet concluded, “I am incredibly proud of everything I’ve accomplished and I do walk away with my head held high.”
