Ali Fazal has opened up about the emotional challenges of working on the Partition drama ‘Batwara 1947’. The actor revealed in a recent interview that the intense role stayed with him even after filming wrapped.
Backed by Aamir Khan, the film has also been in the news for its recent title change.
Ali Fazal’ role that stayed beyond the set
Talking to Mid Day, Ali Fazal admitted that portraying a character in a Partition-based story was not easy. He shared that the emotional weight of the role extended beyond the shoot schedule. “It’s not something you can switch off from easily at the end of the day. The role stayed with me as it’s heavy, internal, and required sustained emotional investment,” he said.
Shift to ‘Lust Stories 3 ’
After completing the heavy drama, Ali Fazal found balance through a lighter project as he moved on to ‘Lust Stories 3’.

Ali Fazal also discussed his approach toward choosing roles and projects. He opened up about the importance of stepping out of comfort zones to grow as a performer. “You should constantly put yourself in uncomfortable spaces, and this year was [just that]. What excites me is this constant shift in energy.
I’m enjoying that directors are making us see ourselves in a different light,” he said.
‘Lahore 1947’ becomes ‘Batwara 1947’
The film, originally titled ‘Lahore 1947’, has reportedly been renamed ‘Batwara 1947’. The decision was made to avoid potential sensitivities linked to the use of a specific geographic reference. According to reports by Vickey Lalwani, the new title aims to reflect the broader human tragedy of Partition.

‘Batwara 1947’ is produced by Aamir Khan and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. It is based on Asghar Wajahat’s play ‘Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai’. The narrative is set in the backdrop of India’s Partition in 1947. The film features Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, and Abhimanyu Singh.
