Jana Nayagan leak exposes industry’s workflow weak links

Jana Nayagan ’s leak ahead of its release has brought content security into the spotlight, exposing deep-rooted gaps within the industry’s workflow…

Industry voices, including producers, post-production technicians, exhibitors and anti-piracy experts, outline how the leak of Vijay’s Jana Nayagan extends beyond a single instance and points to deeper structural issues in Kollywood’s content security practicesA workflow failue? Editor TS Suresh believes that the reason for the leaks is a workflow problem.

He states, “In the South Indian film industry, files are still shared via tools like Google Drive, WeTransfer, hard drives, pen drives, and even unknown sites, which offer no control once downloaded.

Ideally, production houses should use secure platforms that offer encrypted streaming while preventing downloads and screen recording. There needs to be a structured workflow with centralised data control. Industry needs to take postproduction seriously.

Dedicated post-production supervisors should be appointed.” Do leaks derail OTT deals? In the OTT era, producer G Dhananjheyan points out that content leaks pose high-stakes financial risk. He says, “OTT platforms expect piracy control by the producer before and even after a film’s OTT streaming. The deals are signed based on that. If the producer fails to implement such controls, the platforms may initiate renegotiation of the deal. In some cases, they may even terminate the deal, as the producer is responsible for protecting content.

They might also face revenue losses due to a reduction in prices.” Unfair & disrespectful, say exhibitors From the exhibitors’ perspective, the leak is both damaging and demoralising. However, Ankitha Prakash of Varadaraja Cinemas offers a slightly more optimistic take on the film’s box office prospects. She opines. “I don’t think this is going to affect the box office numbers because people will still watch a Vijay sir film.

You have to watch a star’s film in a theatre to get that experience. But for such an incident to have happened is unfair and disrespectful.

I hope necessary steps are taken so that this is not repeated again.” Telegram is modern-day piracy hub: Anti-piracy body Sharath Sha, founder of the anti-piracy organisation MassBunk AntiPiracy, shares that despite swift takedown efforts, the leaked print was rapidly being circulated. “Initially, the content was spread as multiple clips, which were removed by our team.

Then, the entire film was uploaded by the piracy site and was later taken down by the site’s admins when we contacted them through their domain registrar.”Elaborating on the measures they took to control the leak, he states, “The leaked film was already widespread as it reached Telegram, which is the hub of modern-day piracy. Even though multiple anti-piracy agencies, including ours, collaborated for the single cause of controlling the piracy of Jana Nayagan , the people who wanted to have a glimpse of the film started sharing it across platforms. Several Telegram channels, X, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube links were blocked in humongous numbers by all the anti-piracy agencies.

Despite the work put in by anti-piracy agencies, people will have to be proactive in reporting piracy.”
