Akshaya Tritiya is one of the most auspicious days of Hindu calendar. It is believed that this is considered as the day of “never-ending prosperity” and holds immense religious significance. The sacred temple opened its doors for devotees today, marking the beginning of the revered Char Dham Yatra. Set in the Himalayas, these temples are considered spiritual milestones. Every year, on Akshaya Tritiya, the portals of Gangotri and Yamunotri reopen after remaining closed for winter months. The day attracts thousands of devotees from all over as it is believed that offering prayers here on Akshaya Tritiya brings akshaya punya (never-ending blessings).

Set in the heart of Vrindavan, Banke Bihari is among the most significant temples in the country, dedicated to Radha-Krishana. On the day of Akshay Tritiya, devotees get a rare darshan of Lord Krishna’s ‘lotus feet’. It’s an emotional site for devotees as it is the only time when they are allowed to see the charan or feet of Lord Krishna. As per Hindu belief, touching or even seeing the lord’s lotus feet can change life.

Akshay Tritiya marks the beginning of the 21-day Chandan Yatra and Ratha Yatra preparations in Puri. It is among the most visually and spiritually enriching experiences in Odisha. During this period, the deities are ceremonially bathed in sandalwood paste to keep them cool. They are later taken on boat rides. The day also marks the beginning of chariot making for the world-famous Ratha Yatra.

In the town of Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, Akshaya Tritiya is one of the most-awaited days of the year. It is because of the Dvadasha Garuda Seva, where deities from 12 Vishnu temples come together. A procession is taken out where each deity is mounted on Garuda (the divine eagle) creating a rare visual. The streets come alive with music, colours and rituals. It’s truly a unique and enriching sight.

Simhachalam Temple has one of the most unique rituals wherein Lord Narasimha, who generally remains covered in a thick layer of sandalwood paste, is cleaned off for a few hours to offer a rare darshan to devotees on Akshaya Tritiya. It is the festival of Chandanotsavam. The day allows devotees to see their deity’s in his true form. A rare day!
