3-month-old dies after vaccination in Meerut, kin allege negligence

Meerut: A three-month-old infant died in Daimpur village of Meerut’s Kankerkhera area on Sunday morning, triggering protests by family members who alleged medical negligence after routine vaccination. The child’s family alleged that the baby was given a routine immunisation shot on Saturday, after which an auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) administered a tablet instead of the prescribed oral medicine. “After vaccination, children are usually given oral medicine to prevent fever. However, the ANM gave a tablet, saying the syrup was out of stock,” the baby’s father, Brajpal Singh, said.Family members alleged the baby struggled to consume the tablet and later developed a high fever at night. Around 5am on Sunday, the infant allegedly began vomiting and his condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to his death before medical help could arrive. Following his death, enraged family members protested in the village, blocked a road and raised slogans. Police reached the spot and pacified the family.Chief medical officer Ashok Katariya told TOI that a death audit had been ordered. “WHO will find the cause of death and we will take appropriate action accordingly,” he said.
