Upset over estranged wife, man climbs mobile tower in Samastipur

In a dramatic turn of events in Samastipur, Ajit Kumar, a 27-year-old man, perched himself atop a mobile tower, threatening to take his own life in anguish over his wife’s departure to her parents’ house. His heartache stemmed from suspicions about her fidelity, compounded by a troubling history of domestic violence.

Patna: A 27-year-old man climbed a mobile tower at Madhopur village in Samastipur district on Monday morning and threatened to kill himself, saying he was distressed because his wife refused to return from her parents’ home.He was later brought down by police.The man, identified as Ajit Kumar of Vasudeopur village, suspected his wife’s character and used to beat her. Angry over the assaults, she left for her parents’ house with her two children. The man went several times to persuade her, but she did not return, so he climbed the tower to bring her back home.According to locals, Ajit worked as a construction worker in Surat (Gujarat). He was jailed for a long time in a case in which a youth died.

He was released from jail on Feb 17 this year.Sadar SDPO-II Sanjay Kumar said, “Ajit suspected that his wife had illicit relationship with someone when he was away in Surat. He allegedly used to abuse and beat her. She left Ajit and went to her parents’ home in Madhopur village with her children. Ajit tried to convince her to return home several times, but she refused to return.”On Monday morning, Ajit called local journalists and said his wife was not coming back from her parents’ house and did not want to live with him.

“I am very troubled. I will climb the mobile tower and end my life,” he told them.He then climbed the mobile tower, located about 1km from his in-laws’ house. A crowd gathered at the spot. Locals tried to convince him to come down, but he refused to listen.On information from locals, a Dial-112 police team reached the spot and brought him down after counselling him.The SDPO said, “Ajit was taken to the police station for questioning. His in-laws were also called and both the parties were convinced to settle the matter. After receiving assurance from them, the man was released on a bail bond submitted in Kalyanpur police station.”
