Odisha man suffers stroke on trawler, rescued

Panaji: An Odisha man working aboard a fishing trawler suffered a medical emergency, triggering a late-night rescue effort around 200 nautical miles from Goa’s shore. The Indian Coast Guard rescued the fisherman from the Goan fishing vessel IFB Benny and rushed him to GMC, Bambolim, for treatment.

The evacuation was conducted by the crew of ICGS Achook, a high-speed patrol vessel of the Coast Guard commissioned in 2014.“Fisheries department called us around 10am on Sunday regarding a fishing vessel from Goa that requires assistance. A fisherman on board, who is a native of Odisha, suffered a stroke. Our ship was immediately diverted to the vessel and reached the trawler at night because the distance was very far. The rescue operation was at night around 9.30pm,” said a Coast Guard official.“Because of the stroke, there might be some brain damage. Authorities have already contacted the fisherman’s family and are waiting for their decision regarding surgery and further treatment,” said an official.
