London Tube strike: Major disruption across lines as drivers walk out over 4-day work week

Commuters in the UK capital are bracing for widespread travel disruption as London Underground drivers begin a 24-hour strike from midday Tuesday, with another walkout scheduled later this week. The industrial action, led by the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT), is expected to impact services across the network, with some lines completely shut and others running reduced schedules.

When are the strikes happening

The first phase of the strike begins at 12 noon on Tuesday and continues for 24 hours. A second 24-hour strike will start at midday on Thursday and run into Friday.Tuesday: Normal services until mid-morning; disruption begins late morning, worsening after middayWednesday: Services start later than usual, with no trains before 7:30am; disruption continues till middayThursday: Similar pattern as Tuesday, with strike from middayFriday: Delayed start and gradual recovery through the dayPassengers have been advised to complete journeys by 8pm on strike days, as services will wind down early.

Which lines are affected

Transport authorities have warned of “significant disruption” across most lines, with some routes completely suspended. No service expected on:Piccadilly LineCircle LineMetropolitan Line (between Baker Street and Aldgate)Central Line (between White City and Liverpool Street)Other Underground lines will run limited and less frequent services, and trains are likely to be crowded. However, alternative transport networks including the Elizabeth line, DLR, London Overground and trams are expected to operate normally.

Why are the Tube workers on strike

The dispute centres on a proposed shift to a four-day working week by Transport for London (TfL).While TfL says the plan is voluntary and designed to offer drivers more flexibility without reducing pay, the RMT argues that longer working days could lead to fatigue and compromise safety. The union is instead pushing for a 32-hour work week over four days with no loss in pay.RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey has criticised TfL for failing to make concessions, saying negotiations had reached a deadlock. In contrast, another drivers’ union, Aslef, has backed the proposal, calling it a progressive move that offers a shorter working week.

Impact beyond the Tube

In addition to Underground disruption, some London bus services will also be affected later in the week. A separate strike involving certain routes operated by Stagecoach is expected on Friday, potentially adding to commuter woes.

What should passengers do

Authorities are urging commuters to check live travel updates and plan journeys in advance. With fewer trains running and early closures expected, delays and overcrowding are likely throughout the strike period.Despite the disruption, officials say the impact may not be as severe as previous strikes, as not all unions are participating this time.
