The Edmonton Oilers started their playoff with a much-needed 4-3 victory on NHL Game 1 over the Anaheim Ducks, a match that is sure to begin a competitive series. The outcome was not only remarkable in terms of the scoreline, but also in the way it was achieved.Although Connor McDavid did not score, the comeback of Leon Draisaitl from injuries turned things around. The flexibility of Edmonton to respond to pressure and bank on depth scoring eventually became necessary as the highly charged game came down to the wire.

Leon Draisaitl left an instant impression, contributing two assists, having a direct influence on important goals and stabilizing Edmonton attack. Although he has missed several games because of injury, he exhibited composure and ability to play makers, including assisting the late game-winning goal.Connor McDavid, in turn, was severely pressured by Anaheim in defense. The Ducks tried a strategy of limiting his time and space, as he was forced to give up the ball and created fewer chances to shoot. He played hefty minutes and a couple of shots but was unable to score any points.This strategy was successful on the surface in Anaheim since neutralizing McDavid is usually considered the key intention towards Edmonton.
Draisaitl also posed match oppression to the Ducks as he returned. Anaheim was not able to handle both threats at the same time since two of their elite forwards were on different lines at some point.Tactically, Edmonton was resilient following a loss of momentum mid-game. Anaheim had led the way with a very vigorous response in the second period, but the Oilers adapted well, smoothed their defensive system and created more productive offensive transitions.In the future, it is hardly possible that McDavid would continue to have a quiet night owing to his stable high standards of performance at the elite level. Rhythm on both sides could make the Oilers a much tougher nut to crack as the series advances, had both he and Draisaitl struck rhythm at the same time.
