Anzac Day is just around the corner. Every year, Anzac Day is observed on April 25, and this year, it falls on a Saturday. This day commemorates the service and sacrifice of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who have served and died in military combat.The date marks the landings at Gallipoli, Türkiye, during the First World War in 1915, the first major battle fought by Australian soldiers. On this day, the Anzac soldiers are honoured through dawn services, marches, and performances of the Last Post.

Is Anzac Day 2026 a public holiday?

Yes, Anzac Day is recognized as a public holiday throughout Australia. But as the date falls on a weekend this year, most workers and employers are wondering whether they will get an additional day off.

While the date itself remains a public holiday everywhere, whether Australians actually get a day off depends on where they live.

Who gets an extra day off on Anzac Day?

In most states, this is straightforward. If the holiday lands on a weekend, it’s a weekend. However, several jurisdictions provide a substitute day.For instance, NSW Premier Chris Minns announced in February that an extra public holiday for Anzac Day would be granted for the next two years.

Anzac Day falls on the weekend in 2027 also. So, the additional public holiday will be observed on the following Monday, April 27. The Australian Capital Territory, and the Western Australia has additional public holiday on April 27. However, for all other states and territories, Monday, April 27 is business as usual.

Working on a public holiday

All employees have the right not to work on a public holiday, according to the Fair Work Ombudsman.

However, employers can ask employees to work in some circumstances, depending on the nature, role, and type of work the employee performs.Most employees will be paid their basic salary even if they are not working on the holiday, as per the national employment standards. However, this rule does not apply to casual employees. So, it is important to check with your employer.

What is open on Anzac Day?

April 25 still remains a restricted trading day nationwide.

This means major retailers and supermarkets must stay closed until at least 1pm, however, trading rules vary by state and territory on Anzac Day.Some regions maintaining closure throughout the entire day. However, you will still be able to grab a coffee, because cafes, restaurants and eateries will be open. Essential services such as hospitals, emergency services, petrol stations and most pharmacies are open as usual.

Most grocery and convenience stores, butchers, bakers, chemists, florists, greengrocers, fishmongers and service stations will remain open.

The independent stores, and pubs will operate under different rules. The Monday replacement day, however, is not subject to these trading restrictions, meaning businesses can operate normally if they choose to open.Alcohol sales are also restricted on Anzac Day, but they still differ by state. NSW in particular, has stricter bottle-shop rules. This means you won’t be able to buy alcohol all day in some states. In Victoria and Tasmania, these retailers can open from 1 pm or 12.30 pm.
