Guwahati: Thousands of BJP workers and supporters on Thursday took to the streets of Guwahati and other parts of Assam, slamming Congress-led INDI alliance for opposing the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’.Addressing the protest rally, ‘Mahila Akrosh’, in Guwahati, BJP state president Dilip Saikia said Congress’s opposition to the bill was an injustice and an insult to women’s power — one that the women of the country would never accept.Saikia said despite ruling the country for decades after Independence, Congress never took sincere steps to ensure political rights for women. He reaffirmed that under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the dream of 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies would soon be realised.Saikia, who is also a Lok Sabha MP, further criticised Congress and other opposition parties for promoting dynastic politics, alleging that they had historically prioritised only women from their own families.

Former Union minister and ex-Guwahati MP Bijoya Chakravarty strongly rebuked the opposition, asserting that women must and will secure their rightful place in governance. In an emotional moment, she rendered music maestro Bhupen Hazarika’s iconic song “Aah Aah Ulai Aah”, energising the thousands of women present.
BJP’s state Mahila Morcha president Nilima Devi branded Congress’s stance as “anti-women”. Eminent singers Shanta Uzir, Malabika Bora, and Sandhya Menon added cultural fervour to the movement.Devi said thousands of women rose in unison against the grievous insult inflicted upon the daughters of the nation by Congress and allied opposition parties, who, during the special session of parliament held on April 16-17, opposed the “Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam (Amendment) 2026”.She added that the march had ignited a powerful public opinion in favour of women’s rightful participation in democracy. “The demand for 33% reservation is neither charity nor concession — it is the rightful entitlement of India’s Nari Shakti,” she said.
