Berhampur: The additional district and sessions judge court, Paralakhemundi, in Gajapati district on Friday sentenced a 45-year-old man to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for killing his 35-year-old wife in their house at Adagan under Garabandh police station limits over four years ago.The judge, Bibhu Prasad Panda, has also imposed a fine Rs 10,000 on the convict, Ganga Badamundi. He will undergo an additional six month RI, if he fails to pay the fine amount. The court pronounced its verdict after examining 15 witnesses, including family members of the deceased, Sajani Badamundi, said S K Rath, additional public prosecutor.The incident took place on Dec 29, 2021 night when the accused slit his wife’s neck with a sickle following sudden provocation during a quarrel between them.
She died on the spot. Her brother lodged a complaint in Garabandh police station on Dec 30, 2021. The accused was arrested the same day and has been in jail since, sources said.The court has also recommended the district legal service authority (DLSA) to pay a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to each of three daughters of the deceased, including interim compensation if any allowed in their favour, said RK Mishra, public prosecutor.
He said the court took a lenient view noting that the offence was committed under sudden provocation, and sentenced the convict to seven years’ imprisonment. He added that the convict has three daughters with one who is deaf and mute, while the other two are minors. He also has a son.
