Dutch influencer dies at 19 after tragic battle of 5 years: Inside her rare cancer diagnosis

“I’m still happy and nowhere near ready to go.” Those were some of Jade Kops’ last words, shared just weeks before she died at 19. In one of her final Instagram posts, she wrote a raw, emotional letter to the “annoying tumor” in her throat, pleading for more time.

She just wanted more mornings with family, more moments to simply be alive. Life, though, doesn’t always listen.

Jade Kops’ death: What happened?

On April 24, 2026, Jade’s family announced she’d passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the people she loved. She fought rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer, for five long years, since she was only 14.In the Netherlands, Jade was a familiar, admired face online. She documented everything: her treatments, surgeries, moments of hope, and her pain.

She wasn’t just sharing her own ups and downs; she wanted to raise awareness about childhood cancer and help others going through the same nightmare.Jade managed to do more than most adults ever do. Per People, Jade wrote a bestselling autobiography, ‘Voor Altijd Jong’ (Forever Young), raised millions for childhood cancer research, and was honored with the Order of Orange-Nassau, which is one of the country’s highest distinctions.

But all that strength was covering up a giant, terrifying reality: there wasn’t much time left.

Rhabdomyosarcoma: What exactly is it?

Jade’s symptoms started out like any ordinary teenage complaint, but turned out to be something rare and terrifying. For the unversed, rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a cancer that develops from immature muscle cells and hits mostly kids and teens. It usually grows in skeletal muscle tissue, typically popping up in the head, neck, reproductive organs, or limbs.

Doctors recognize it through imaging and biopsies, and try to treat it with a mix of surgery, chemo, and radiation.Per Mayo Clinic, this cancer is rare, but out of all childhood soft tissue sarcomas, it’s actually the most common. It can show up in lots of places: the head, neck, arms, legs, bladder, chest, or reproductive organs. There are two main types: Embryonal (usually in the head, neck, and genital areas, mostly in kids) and Alveolar (more aggressive, seen in teens, often in the arms, legs, and trunk).

There’s a third type, pleomorphic, but that almost always affects adults. But why does it happen?Basically, muscle cells don’t finish growing the way they should, sometimes because of mutations in genes like PAX/FOX01. The symptoms depend on where the tumor grows: you might notice a lump, swelling, sometimes pain, or weird blockages, or even the eye protruding. Per the Cleveland Clinic, RMS survival rates are pretty good if it’s caught early.

Localized RMS has over 80% survival, but if it spreads (to lungs, bones, bone marrow), chances drop fast.

Early detection matters.

Jade Kops’ battle with the rare disease

For Jade, it started with unclear speech, snoring, and swelling. However, medical checks led to the harsh diagnosis: RMS in her neck, creeping from her throat toward her ear. Since rhabdomyosarcoma often starts deep inside muscle tissue, early signs can be subtle, like swelling, pain, trouble swallowing, a lump, or pressure. And for her, daily life started to feel impossible. For the unversed, treatments for RMS are brutal: from chemo to radiation to surgery. Jade went through all of them. At first, there was hope. After a year and a half, scans looked promising. But soon enough, the cancer came back.Everything changed after that.By 2024, doctors told Jade a cure wasn’t possible anymore. In late 2025, she made a tough decision: stop treatment.

The risks were too high, chances too low. She focused instead on making the time she had left as good as possible.Over those five years, she raised over EUR 2 million for pediatric cancer research at the Princess Máxima Center. With her parents, she founded the Jade Uitwaaimomenten Foundation, helping families affected by childhood cancer create memories and find relief during treatment.Jade spoke at schools, challenged the casual use of “cancer” as an insult, and turned her suffering into advocacy that broke through the silence and taboo around childhood illness. In 2024, Queen Máxima visited Jade at her home, honoring her with one of the Netherlands’ top royal distinctions. In February 2026, scans showed her tumor had spread over almost her entire left face. In March, doctors said she probably had only weeks left.Still, Jade kept speaking honestly to her followers. Just two weeks before her death, she shared a letter to her tumor, along with a photo of her cuddling her brother. She wrote, “The symptoms are increasing, and as a result, I am deteriorating rapidly. Things that used to work now require effort, or are impossible altogether. My days are spent in bed, hooked up to four medication pumps.”“Every night, I’m afraid I won’t wake up the next morning. I’m living my biggest nightmare. And it’s all because of you.”She added she was “saying goodbye to herself,” as the “ticking time bomb has exploded,” and the tumor kept growing.“Because of you, I’m closer to death every day, but I don’t want to leave yet… please slow down. Give me time. I am still happy and nowhere near ready to go,” she wrote. In March, Jade also shared the pain of choosing her own plot in a cemetery. She posted a photo of herself pushing a wheelchair, admitting it felt nerve-wracking, like she was touching something she wanted nothing to do with, but also thankful she still got to make that choice herself.“The thought that my name will be written on the grave here in a while causes a lot of sadness on the way back,” she said. “I am now even more grateful for every morning that I wake up…”On April 24, her family confirmed Jade died at 5:50 a.m. local time. The statement on Instagram read, “Deeply saddened and incredibly proud of our brave daughter and sister, we wish to let you know that Jade passed away this morning at 5:50 AM in our presence… The farewell and burial of Jade will take place in private.”
