Family appeals to govt to bring worker’s body from Doha

Berhampur: Family members of a migrant worker of Naikanipalli in Ganjam district’s Khallikote block, who died at his workplace in Doha two days ago, have appealed to the district administration to make special arrangements to bring back his body.The deceased was identified as Kuna Khuntia (25). He was working as a labourer in a private construction company in Doha for the last five months. After returning from his duty on Friday night, he went to sleep. In the morning he did not wake up. Others in the mess rushed him to the nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead“We don’t know how he died. We request the government to bring back his body for the last rite,” said Jaya Khuntia, father of the deceased.

The cause of death would be known only after getting the medical report, he said.The deceased was unmarried. He was constantly in touch with his family after the West Asia conflict. “We did not expect such sad news. He was the only bread earner of his family,” said Runu, mother of the deceased. “We have requested the tehsildar of Khallikote to make arrangements to bring his body to the village from Qatar,” said Mithun Khuntia, the local sarpanch.

District labour officer (DLO), Chhatrapur, Barsarani Jena said they have conducted a preliminary inquiry on Monday about his death after a request from his family members. “We have also recorded the statements of his family members. We will submit the inquiry report to the state’s labour commissioner soon through district collector take further step,” he said. Around 30 people from the the village are working in West Asis as labourers.
