Cupra Kiro driver Pepe Martí recently launched a Tuesday series titled Professor Pepe. The 20-year-old Spaniard is back with a new episode, this time addressing how much studying a Formula E driver must do to understand the workings of a Formula E Evo car.
From explaining the purpose of reading a hefty manual to highlighting its importance, Marti shed light on the often unseen side of being a racing driver.
Pepe Martí explains why Formula E drivers must study their manual
Pepe Marti shared the new video on Instagram with the caption: “Profesor Pepe. Ep.7: The Pilot’s Manual. New episode every Tuesday.”Holding a large manual in his hand, Marti says in the video, “They say that drivers don’t have to study. Well, something like this is what we have to study before racing in Formula E.
Why? Because in Formula E we have a very high level of technology and there are a thousand things we have to be aware of in the car. As a rookie driver, I had to study this before getting into a car in Valencia.”Recalling his initial experience of driving a Formula E car, Marti added, “In fact, the first time I got in, I didn’t have time, and I remember being on the grid asking over the radio, ‘Hey, what do I have to adjust and where is it?’ Because otherwise, I wouldn’t find it.
There are a lot of things like this. Inside this manual, there are faults we might encounter in the car, all the systems we can change, and all the settings that affect how the car performs on track.
And we have to manage all of this while driving. So it is a championship with a lot of technology, a lot to control, and as a driver you also have to study.”
Reacting to the video, one fan joked: “I lied to you, today we’re not watching Netflix, we’re going to watch Professor Pepe.” Another said: “Tuesday is the best day of the week because there is class with Professor Pepe.” A third fan commented: “OMG, how did Pepe finish that manual (I thought it was his textbook…) in three days?”After taking part in six Formula E races this season, Pepe Marti currently sits 12th in the Drivers’ Standings with 19 points. The Cupra Kiro rookie recorded the fastest lap in Round 5 in Jeddah, where he finished sixth. He still has 11 races remaining to prove his mettle on track this season. Also read: Exclusive interview: Edoardo Mortara shines for Mahindra Racing this season, says “important to keep your feet on the ground”
