Degrees must go beyond textbooks, logical thinking key in AI era: LG

New Delhi: Lieutenant governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Thursday said academic degrees must go beyond textbook knowledge, stressing that logical thinking and problem-solving abilities are critical strengths in the age of artificial intelligence and innovation.Addressing the 18th convocation of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), popularly known as IP University, Sandhu said education should equip students with adaptability, critical thinking and the courage to innovate. “The country needs problem-solvers who can tackle complex challenges in areas such as urban development, public health and digital governance,” he said.Invoking the teachings of Guru Gobind Singh, the LG described knowledge as a powerful instrument of justice and service, and urged students to treat education as a responsibility towards society and the nation.

“Education must go beyond degrees, nurturing adaptability, critical thinking and solution-oriented thinking. I urge students to lead with integrity, choose resilience over comfort and build responsibly.

Every individual has the potential to contribute to Viksit Bharat and Viksit Delhi,” Sandhu said.During the ceremony, the university awarded a total of 26,649 degrees, including 22,932 undergraduate and 3,582 postgraduate degrees, besides 11 MPhil and 124 PhD degrees.

Women accounted for 70% of the PhD recipients this year. In addition, 76 gold medals and six memorial awards were presented to meritorious students.Chief minister Rekha Gupta said the convocation marked years of hard work, discipline and dedication by students, adding that the youth would play a pivotal role in driving India’s development. “Today’s graduates are the real drivers of Viksit Bharat. Your talent and capability will take the country to new heights on the global stage,” she said, urging students to use their education not only for personal growth but also for the larger good of society.Gupta also praised the university’s initiatives in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, data science and design innovation. Highlighting the Atal Incubation Centre, she said IP University had supported more than 170 startups, helping young people transition from job seekers to job creators.The ceremony was attended by students, parents, faculty members and dignitaries. Vice chancellor Mahesh Verma, in his address, described the convocation as a reflection of perseverance, discipline and growth, reaffirming the university’s focus on innovation, research and preparing students for a rapidly evolving world.
