Man pleads guilty to plotting attack on Taylor Swift concert in Vienna - Report

About charges and possible punishment

According to an AP report, Beran A (full name not disclosed) is accused of being part of a terrorist group and planning an attack. He could face up to 20 years in prison. Another man, Arda K., is also on trial with him.

Planned attack near stadium

Authorities said the man planned to attack people outside the Ernst Happel Stadium. Many fans were expected there. Around 30,000 people were outside each night, and 65,000 were inside. Officials said he wanted to “kill as many people as possible.”

He planned to use knives or homemade bombs. Police searched his home on August 7, 2024. They found materials used to make bombs. The concerts were supposed to start the next day, but they were cancelled.

Links to wider international plot

Prosecutors also said the accused was part of a bigger plan. Along with others, he planned attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan in 2024. Fortunately, these attacks never happened.

A third man in the group attacked a security guard in Mecca and was arrested there. After the failed plans, Beran A returned to Vienna and started planning the concert attack.

Taylor Swift reacts to cancellation

Taylor Swift later shared her feelings online. She said, “Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating.” She also said, “The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt.”Fans from around the world had come to see her. Even though the shows were cancelled, Swifities (term used to describe Taylor Swift fans), gathered in the city. They shared friendship bracelets and sang songs together. The case will continue in court on May 12.
