Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry election sees more than 80% voter turnout

CHENNAI: The election to the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry concluded on Monday with over 80% voter turnout. Counting of votes will commence on April 3. The election was held to elect 23 members of the council.The election was conducted by a high-power committee constituted by the Supreme Court, headed by former Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh high court Justice Rajiv Shakdher and comprising senior advocate E Om Prakash and advocate Amit George. Former judge of the Madras high court Justice K N Basha acted as the returning officer.The polling took place in 166 booths in Tamil Nadu and two in Puducherry from 10am to 5pm. For the first time, the election was conducted using a QR code system to verify voter details.

A total of 143 candidates contested the election.Political leaders who are also lawyers, including R S Bharathi of DMK, Thol Thirumavalavan of VCK, and Vanathi Srinivasan of BJP, cast their votes in the election.According to senior advocate and vice chairman of Bar Council of India S Prabakaran, approximately 80,000 votes have been polled all over Tamil Nadu. “The election was held peacefully in all the polling booths. The credit must go to the high-power committee appointed by the Supreme Court,” he said.
