India’s economy continues to show strength despite mounting global pressures from the West Asia crisis, rising inflation and renewed trade tensions, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) October Bulletin, released on Friday.

In the ‘State of the Economy’ article, RBI officials said strong macroeconomic fundamentals and targeted policy interventions were helping cushion India against external shocks, even as geopolitical conflicts and disruptions to global supply chains posed fresh economic risks.

India’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew 7.8 per cent in the first quarter of FY2026-27, supported by domestic demand and services activity.

The growth comes despite India’s dependence on imported energy and an international environment marked by volatile crude oil prices, trade uncertainties and tighter financial conditions.

According to the RBI Bulletin, high-frequency indicators across industry and services continued to reflect strength in domestic economic activity.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF), in its October 2026 World Economic Outlook, raised India’s growth forecast for FY2026-27 by 60 basis points to 7 per cent from its July estimate of 6.4 per cent, citing stronger-than-expected domestic demand and robust services activity.

Rising Inflation And Crude Oil Prices Pose Risks

However, inflationary pressures have intensified, with India’s headline retail inflation climbing to a 23-month high of 5.5 per cent in September 2026 from 4.8 per cent in August.

According to RBI officials, the increase was driven by higher prices across food, fuel and core inflation components.

Weak monsoon conditions and El Niño-related weather disruptions contributed to rising prices of cereals, pulses, edible oils, sugar and onions, putting additional pressure on household budgets.

The Indian basket of crude oil rose to $121.3 per barrel in October, measured up to October 16, from $114.6 per barrel in September, measured up to September 18, according to figures cited in Hindu BusinessLine. However, retail prices of petrol, diesel and domestic LPG remained unchanged in October until October 19, the report said.

West Asia Crisis And Trade Tensions Cloud Global Outlook

On the global front, the RBI Bulletin’s authors cautioned that the world economy was facing multiple shocks, with geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions and renewed trade uncertainties adding to inflationary pressures.

The West Asia crisis has pushed up energy costs and disrupted supply chains, prompting major central banks to raise interest rates to contain inflation.

Meanwhile, sovereign bond yields in advanced economies have reached multi-decade highs, bringing concerns about elevated public debt, fiscal sustainability and potential risks to financial stability into sharper focus.

Although the IMF has upgraded its global growth forecasts for 2026 and 2027, the Bulletin noted that significant downside risks continued to cloud the outlook.

The authors also identified technological advances, particularly artificial intelligence, as a potential positive factor for the global economy, with productivity gains offering some relief amid broader economic challenges.

India's gross domestic product grew by 7.8 percent in the first quarter of FY2026-27, driven by strong domestic demand and active services sectors.

The International Monetary Fund raised India's growth forecast for FY2026-27 by 60 basis points to 7 percent, up from its July estimate of 6.4 percent.

Headline retail inflation climbed to a 23-month high of 5.5 percent due to higher prices across food, fuel, and core inflation components, worsened by weak monsoon conditions and El Niño-related weather disruptions.
