Councillors demand installation of green nets at traffic signals in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: Councillors and motorists have demanded that the Coimbatore corporation install green nets at traffic signals to protect motorists from the scorching sun. Chitra Vellingiri, councillor of ward 26, wrote to the corporation commissioner on Tuesday, requesting the civic body to erect green nets at junctions.Chithra said, “The temperature is becoming unbearable, especially to motorists. In the last two years, the corporation had installed green nets as temporary shade at many junctions, including the Town Hall, Saravanampatti, Sundarapuram and Sanganoor junctions. Motorists have to wait in the scorching sun because there is no natural canopy.”She said distribution of free buttermilk had also been halted. “The corporation should look into the issue,” she said.N Sivakumar, who works in a private finance company, said, “Waiting at the signals without any shelter drains out the energy. For employees like us who do only field work, the temporary shade is a relief while waiting at signals. Earlier, there used to be free buttermilk spots. But this summer, none of these facilities have been made.”A corporation official stated that the request from the councillor was received. “The execution is doubtful due to the election model code of conduct in place. However, action will be taken to ensure public safety,” the official said.
