Exclusive - Sprehaa Chatterjee: A show like Anupama has the power to stay relevant because of its emotional honesty and relatability

Sprehaa Chatterjee, who is currently seen playing the role of Maahi in Rajan Shahi’s Anupama, says it’s important for an actor to bring their own unique touch to a character. She tries to stay true to the story while also adding her own creative touch. She said, “Anupama has been entertaining the audience for over five years now, and my heart is full of gratitude, and I feel blessed to be a part of a legacy-driven show like Anupama. The storytelling is powerful, and the characters are strong enough that the audience resonates with them. For me, individuality isn’t about standing apart but about staying honest and being creative.”She added, “I try balancing respect for the narrative with my own creative instincts, while still honouring the essence of the show, so that Mahi feels both authentic to the story and uniquely alive.

I do that with my expressions, reactions, and emotions that feel real and distinct and don’t feel mechanical or repetitive.”She says actors need to be flexible and adapt quickly to changes in the story while staying true to their character. She explained, “For me, when things change last minute, the real task is to make sure Mahi still feels consistent and believable.” Sprehaa focuses on what is true about Mahi in every moment.

No matter how the scenes change, Mahi’s emotions, values, and personality stay the same. “The script may evolve, but the character’s emotional truth is what keeps everything connected for the audience,” she added. When asked how Anupama stands out among today’s streaming platforms, she said, “The audience is exposed to a wide variety of stories, formats, and performances, but still television has a very strong connection with family audiences on a daily basis.

Also, the scale and pace of television are very different from what reaches people every single day, and it creates a habit and an emotional bond.”“A show like Anupama has the power to stay relevant because of its emotional honesty and relatability. It connects with people on an emotional and cultural level that’s very real and immediate,” she added. She also said that Anupama stays competitive because it adapts to the times. “It brings in new characters, changing relationships, and situations that reflect real life while still holding on to its core values. That consistency is something viewers really connect with. So I think it’s not about competing directly with OTT but about offering something equally engaging in a different way,” Sprehaa said.
