Google brings Personal Intelligence to Gemini app in India: What is it and how it works

Google is rolling out a major upgrade to its Gemini AI app in India, rolling out its powerful Personal Intelligence system that securely connects Gemini to Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube and Search to deliver responses uniquely tailored to the user.

The company said that the feature is launched for paid Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers, with a wider release for free users expected in the coming weeks.

Once enabled, it works across Web, Android and iOS and with all of the models in the Gemini model picker, the company said.

How Personal Intelligence works in Gemini App

Instead of providing generic answers like Gemini AI chatbot, Personal Intelligence allows Gemini to cross-reference details available across different apps installed on a user’s phone or tablet.

It has two primary strengths: retrieving specific details from history and reasoning across multiple sources to solve complex problems. For example, if you are planning a vacation to Jaipur, Gemini can now do the “heavy lifting” for you:

  • From Gmail, it can pull your flight and hotel booking confirmations into a single, clear timeline.
  • From Google Photos, it can find a screenshot of a local map or a photo of a souvenir you saved weeks ago.
  • From YouTube, it can suggest a dinner spot based on a local food trend video you recently watched.

By connecting these apps, Gemini saves users from digging through multiple apps and search histories while on the go, Google says.

Personal Intelligence built with ‘privacy-first’ controls

Google says it has built Personal Intelligence with a “off-by-default” approach.

This means that users choose exactly which apps to link and can disconnect them at any time. The company also says that the users data is not sent to third-party servers for processing, and Gemini will attempt to explain which source it used (like a specific email) so you can verify the information yourself.Google also clarified that Gemini does not train directly on your private Gmail inbox or your Photos library. Instead, it only uses your specific prompts and the AI’s responses to improve, and only after personal data has been filtered or hidden. The “Nuance” Challenge: Avoiding MistakesGoogle acknowledges that the feature is still in beta and may occasionally get things wrong or “over-personalize.” The AI may struggle with relationship changes, such as a divorce, or misinterpret your hobbies. For instance, if you have hundreds of photos at a golf course, Gemini might assume you love golf. If you actually only go there to support your son, you can simply correct the AI by saying, “I don’t like golf,” and it will remember that preference for future chats. How to get Personal IntelligenceThe feature is appearing today for eligible subscribers across Web, Android, and iOS. If you don’t see an invitation on your home screen, you can enable it manually:Open the Gemini app and tap your profile icon to enter Settings.Tap on Personal Intelligence.Select Connected Apps and toggle on the services you want to link (Gmail, Photos, etc.).Google is encouraging users to provide feedback via the “thumbs down” button on inaccurate responses to help refine the model during this early rollout phase.
