Veteran playback singer Kavita Krishnamurti reflects on Akshaya Tritiya, a festival deeply rooted in cultural belief and tradition. Despite her busy recording career, during which her mother would buy gold for her, Krishnamurti emphasizes her respect for auspicious timings and the importance of continuing such beautiful traditions.

Veteran playback singer Kavita Krishnamurti reflects on the significance of Akshaya Tritiya, describing it as a day deeply rooted in cultural belief, tradition, and personal memory.

For her, such festivals are not just ceremonial markers on the calendar but moments shaped by faith, family customs, and a long-standing respect for auspicious timings. She recalls how the festival played out in her own life during her busiest recording years. “Indian festivals like Akshay Tritiya ka bahut maine hota hai and there is a reason that they are considered ‘shubh din’ for all of us,” she says. “I remember since the time I was young, and I used to be busy recording at studios, my mother would go out and buy for me… jewellery shop jaakar, mere liye gold ke earring, ya necklace kharid ke leke aati thi.

Mujhe waqt nahi milta tha unn dino so she would do it for me.” She adds candidly, “Main Akshaya Tritiya mein kabhi kuch nahi khareed paai. Studio mein mere din beetae hain.” Having lived and worked across cities, she says her understanding of the festival deepened with time. “Jab se main Maharashtra mein aayi hoon, Mumbai mein kaam karne lagi tabse mujhe Akshay Tritiya ka pata tha. When I was very young and was in Delhi, I did not know much about this.

But now, wherever I am; in Bengaluru, Karnataka; yahan pe bhi bahut maante hain and we all celebrate this auspicious day.” Despite her hectic professional life, Kavita emphasizes that her belief in such traditions has remained intact. “It is said that if you buy gold on Akshay Tritiya day, it is good for your family; ye sab jo hamare shastras mein hai… main yeh sab bahut izzat karti hoon, bahut maanti hoon,” she says. “Aise traditions hamare desh mein chalte rehna chahiye. They are all beautiful, auspicious traditions and ceremonies and we should respect and follow them.” For her, the essence lies in the idea of auspicious timing and collective faith. “Yeh sab achhe din, shubh moment hote hain,” she notes, adding that such beliefs are also reinforced within her family. “My husband believes in astrology and we know that there are auspicious days and moments in the Hindu calendar when whatever you do has a positive effect. That is why we follow these traditions.”
