John Ternus, next Apple CEO, is proof that working in the shadows with quiet resolve can make you emerge as the strongest leader

In an era where social media plays a major role in curating personas, John Ternus, the next CEO of Apple Inc., seems to be an exception. As Tim Cook announced he is stepping down from his role as CEO of Apple after 15 years at the helm, X (formerly Twitter) was abuzz with the news.

The obvious search for the next person led to the named successor, Ternus. But, alas, there was almost nothing to find on any verified or official profile, either on X or Instagram. There is a LinkedIn profile, but you would be surprised how sparse it is. At one level, it’s understandable—top CEOs hardly handle their social media profiles themselves. Their teams often play that part. So, perhaps in the future, we will see him more active online. For now, however, it’s heartening to find someone who isn’t overtly conscious of his image, as Ternus seems to be; someone who has operated in the shadow of giants like Steve Jobs and then Cook, and still managed to shine in his field.

Ternus joined Apple’s product design team in 2001 and became the vice president of hardware engineering in 2013. He later joined the firm’s executive team in 2021, taking on the role of senior vice president of hardware engineering, reporting to Cook. His appointment as CEO comes at a time when the tech industry at large is grappling with rapid advancements in artificial intelligence. Ternus holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and worked at Virtual Research Systems before joining Apple.

Meanwhile, Cook will transition to the role of Executive Chairman, succeeding Arthur Levinson from September 1, 2026.

The power of quiet consistency

What makes Ternus particularly compelling is not just his résumé, but what it represents in today’s hyper-visible world: the power of quiet consistency. In an age where leadership is often equated with visibility—tweets, keynotes, personal branding—there is something deeply reassuring about someone who has let their work speak long before their name did.

Leaders like Ternus remind us that credibility, when built over decades of disciplined execution, does not need amplification.

It carries its own weight.

Apple Bets New CEO John Ternus Will Bring Back Jobs-Era Decisiveness

Apple’s next CEO John Ternus, left, with Tim Cook, current CEO, who is stepping down. What makes Ternus particularly compelling is not just his résumé, but his quiet resolve that’s especially impressive in today’s hyper-visible world

There is also a strategic advantage to this kind of quiet resolve. Leaders who operate away from constant public scrutiny often develop sharper focus and stronger internal alignment. They are less reactive to noise and more anchored in long-term thinking—qualities that become invaluable in moments of transition. In Ternus’s case, having spent years immersed in the core of Apple’s hardware innovation, his leadership is likely to be shaped less by optics and more by substance.

And perhaps that is exactly what the moment demands: not a personality to follow, but a steady hand to trust.
