Los Angeles Dodgers utility player Kiké Hernández has sparked a major debate across baseball after openly sharing how he ranks two of the sport’s biggest honors. For most Major League Baseball players, winning the World Series is the ultimate dream.
It is the title every team chases every season. But Hernández recently said that representing Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic means even more to him. His comments quickly spread online and fans began discussing whether national pride should come before MLB glory.Hernández has proudly represented Puerto Rico before, helping the team win silver medals in the 2013 and 2017 World Baseball Classic tournaments.
However, he will not play in the 2026 World Baseball Classic because of elbow surgery he underwent in November. Even though he cannot take the field this year, Hernández is still supporting Puerto Rico and speaking about how much the tournament means to him.
Kiké Hernández says representing Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic means more than winning the World Series
During a recent media conversation, Kiké Hernández explained why the tournament holds such deep meaning for him. According to Miguel Logo, Hernández said in Spanish:“I have played in five World Series, and I don’t know if it’s because what’s across my chest, but the classic feels like it’s above that.”
His words quickly caught attention because Hernández has already experienced success in October baseball. The Dodgers player has appeared in several postseason runs and played important roles during playoff games. Because of his strong performances, fans often call him “October Kiké.”But Hernández believes the World Baseball Classic is different. The event happens only once every few years, and players represent their homeland rather than their MLB club.
That emotional connection, he says, changes everything.Even though his elbow surgery keeps him out of the 2026 tournament, Hernández is still showing support. Reports say he dyed his hair blonde to follow Puerto Rico’s team tradition and has also helped recruit players for the roster. One major addition is star third baseman Nolan Arenado, who chose to represent Puerto Rico to honor his mother’s heritage.At the same time, not every MLB player feels the same way about the tournament.
Some athletes decide to focus on their MLB teams instead. Players sometimes skip the event because of injury risks or because they want to prepare for the upcoming season.That difference in opinion is exactly why Hernández’s comments started such a big conversation online. Some fans said international baseball is more exciting because players represent their culture and pride. Others argued that the World Series will always remain the most important prize in professional baseball. For Hernández, though, the answer seems clear.
