Kritika Kamra says indie film struggles make her hesitant to turn producer: 'I’m seeing it is currently struggling'

Forging an individual path often requires resisting industry norms, and Kritika Kamra is doing just that. After taking a leap with JioHotstar’s ‘The Great Shamsuddin Family’ in 2025, the actor found both appreciation and a renewed belief in telling intimate, character-driven stories that may not follow the conventional commercial template. The response to ‘The Great Shamsuddin Family’ pushed Kamra to commit to another independent film. However, the journey hasn’t been easy. With no “big male star” attached and a debutant director at the helm, securing backing has proven challenging. Reflecting on the impact of her previous film, she shared with Mid-Day, “It was a simple film, but it started a conversation. I got letters from girls saying that they relate with my character’s eldest daughter syndrome.

And then the larger commentary, about belonging, identity, and safety resonated.”Kritika Kamra on why producing feels like a risky roadDespite her passion for meaningful cinema, Kamra admits the struggles of the current project have made her cautious about stepping into production. “I’m seeing how my indie film is currently struggling. Industry forces just make it difficult for a new voice to come up, especially in this environment.

The journey deters me from trying to produce. I don’t know if it’ll even get a release. I’m doing it because (my previous work) has emboldened my conviction in smaller stories that speak to everybody.

, and Girish Kulkarni, ‘Matka King’ explores the gritty underbelly of gambling and power in the city, blending history with fiction to create a compelling crime drama.
