LDA to map heritage trees for city museum

Lucknow: To mark the World Earth Day, Lucknow Development Authority on Wednesday decided to undertake a city-wide exercise to map heritage trees older than 100 years, and document their history for public display at the Lucknow Museum of Heritage and Art.As part of the initiative, LDA’s horticulture wing, the museum’s curation team and the project monitoring cell will jointly conduct the survey. The authority will collaborate with the National Botanical Research Institute for scientific documentation and validation.LDA vice-chairperson, Prathmesh Kumar, directed the officials to prepare a detailed catalogue mentioning each tree’s species, estimated age, location and historical significance. The catalogue, supported by photographs, will be put on display at the museum to help residents engage with the city’s natural heritage.Highlighting the need for conservation, Kumar cited a 400-year-old banyan tree at Dilkusha Garden, noting that ageing trees undergo tylosis, where the inner trunk hollows and survival depends on outer layers. He warned against RCC platforms around tree bases, saying they block water and nutrient absorption of tress and hasten their decline.
