Man held for duping patients’ attendants on pretext of facilitating treatment at KGMU

Lucknow: A 26-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly duping patients and their attendants at King Goerge’s Medical University (KGMU) by posing as a representative of a fictitious organisation.Hassam Ahmad was apprehended by MBBS students inside the KGMU campus and later handed over to the Chowk Police Station. The arrest followed a formal complaint sent by the university’s Proctor Office, signed by chief proctor Prof RS Kushwaha, highlighting alleged acts of cheating, forgery, and other criminal activities.According to police, the accused had been operating under ‘Cardio Seva Sansthan,’ a purported trust, and was allegedly extorting money from patients and their attendants on the pretext of facilitating medical treatment and hospital services.

Preliminary findings suggest that several unsuspecting victims were targeted within the hospital premises.During investigation, police uncovered that the accused had also forged the signature of Dr KK Singh, professor in the department of surgery and dean (paramedical), to issue a fake notice to MBBS 2023 batch students. The forged notice claimed that a medical conference would be held at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on April 29 and invited students to participate. Authorities later confirmed that the notice was fabricated, and no such event was scheduled.

Further scrutiny of the accused’s mobile phone revealed multiple suspicious documents and digital records. Police said initial findings indicate that he may have been attempting to lure MBBS students—particularly female students—on the pretext of academic conferences and take them to Delhi or other locations, pointing towards a potentially serious criminal conspiracy.DCP, West Zone, Kamlesh Dixit, said that based on the complaint, a case has been registered at Chowk police station under charges related to cheating, forgery, impersonation, and criminal breach of trust. The accused, a native of Siddharthnagar district currently residing in Lucknow, is being subjected to detailed interrogation.
