Police said the couple had frequent disputes, mainly over the man’s drinking habits
Gurgaon: A 30-year-old man allegedly strangled his wife to death before dying by suicide at their rented house in Ambedkar Nagar on Sunday evening.The couple, identified as Sonam (28) and Deepak, natives of Alwar in Rajasthan, had been married for about eight years and had been living in the city for the past seven years.
Their six-year-old son was in another room at the time of the incident and was not aware of what had happened.Police said they received information about the incident around 6.30pm on April 19, following which a team from Sector 9A police station reached the spot along with crime scene and fingerprint experts.Police said Sonam’s sister, who was staying with her, had stepped out for work around 4pm. When she returned around 6pm, she found Sonam lying dead in the kitchen, while Deepak was found dead in another room.
The bodies were taken to a civil hospital, where doctors declared them dead. After the autopsy, the bodies were handed over to the family.“The couple had frequent disputes, mainly over Deepak’s drinking habits. About a month ago, he had moved out after a quarrel, following which Sonam had called her sister to stay with her,” police spokesperson Sandeep Turan said.Deepak worked as a taxi driver, police said. A neighbour said Sonam was employed at a private company and that the couple had frequent quarrels.
“I was inside my boutique when I heard the screams of Sonam’s younger sister. She ran downstairs around 6pm and raised an alarm,” the neighbour said.Another neighbour said the family was residing alone in the double-storey building, adding, “They lived on the first floor of the house and had been staying there for several years.”A relative of the woman alleged that Deepak had assaulted her last month and had earlier attempted to strangle her.Police said a case of murder has been registered and further investigation is underway.
