Nagpur man, 23, collapsed after gym session: His mother's alertness saved his life

Fitness enthusiasts have overtaken the internet like no other. While some share personal journeys, others aim to influence their followers. However, many end up making a mark that others fail to create.

23-year-old Om Bhoyar frequently posted reels of his attempts to perform deadlifts. On April 10, he had just posted a reel of another such attempt at a Nagpur gym before returning home. But soon, he collapsed and lost consciousness. His mother Aarti Bhoyar, a nurse by profession, quickly grasped what it was and saved his life. She understood that her son was undergoing a paralytic attack from a possible brain haemorrhage and realised that the ‘golden hour’ to possibly undo the damage was fast elapsing. Since his mother knew that the first 304 hours were of paramount importance in such medical situations, she rushed him to the hospital. Diagnostic tests revealed he had a blood clot in his brain which had to be removed using a mechanical thrombectomy procedure. The surgery ensured that blood flow to his brain was restored, aiding in his recovery. Owing to his mother’s timely intervention, Bhoyar’s health improved rapidly and he was discharged from the hospital on April 21st.

What causes a hemorrhagic stroke?

A hemorrhagic stroke is a life-threatening emergency wherein a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and causes blood to leak into surrounding tissues. It can cut the connection between relevant parts of the brain and connected body parts, leading to paralysis of the body parts connected. Symptoms of the case include headache, nausea, vomiting, fainting, and confusion as per Cleveland Clinic. However, with timely intervention, the accumulated blood can be removed from the brain through medication or surgery, mitigating the effects of paralysis and increasing chances of recovery. In terms of exercise, acute bouts of vigorous or extreme exertion can act as a trigger for hemorrhagic stroke. Bhoyar, a BPharm student had been experiencing headache and vomitted once or twice two days prior to the incident, symptoms that are often overlooked, as per interventional radiologist Dr Sachin Dhomne. Bhoyar was trying to do deadlifts when the incident happened. He had no substance addictions, diabetes or hypertension. Thus, it is vital to ensure that you take rests between exercise sessions. But the journey continues for Bhoyar who said: “Lost many times, but giving up is not an option. I will keep trying, until I win”
