Nilgai herd rescued from well in Palamu

Daltonganj: A quick response team (QRT) of the forest department rescued a herd of six nilgais from a kutcha well in a village under Chainpur police station limits of the district on Saturday.Satyam Kumar, the divisional forest officer of Medininagar forest division, said news reached that the herd had fallen into a well in Talee village.

The well did not have any parapet.

The QRT was then pressed into action.“Some villagers suggested pulling out of the animals one by one using nylon rope. But the idea was rejected as the process would have been time consuming. Besides, the nylon ropes could have injured the neck of nilgais. Then, an earthmover was used to dig up the ground and create a slope towards the well. Once the slope was ready the nilgais climbed up and leapt towards the nearby forest,” the DFO said.

The rescue operation lasted 30 minutes. The well, the DFO said, was 12-feet deep and had six feet of water. This is the second episode of nilgais falling into a well in Palamu. A year back, three dozen monkeys fell into a well under Panki police station limits.Officials suspected that the herd may have fallen into the well in the early hours of Saturday.
