Patna: With the railways sanctioning Rs49.30 crore for its redevelopment in the 2026–27 financial year and work underway on the Rs283.16-crore state-of-the-art coaching complex, Patliputra Junction is set to emerge as a major rail hub under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS).Around 40–50% of the coaching complex work has been completed and is expected to be finished within 18 months. The complex will support the maintenance of modern trains, including semi-high-speed services such as the Vande Bharat Express. The facility will include an administrative building, three stabling lines, a pit line, two washing lines, two workshop lines and three inspection lines.Other works, including an exit point in backside of the station, are also progressing rapidly.
The deadline for the entire project has been set for 2027. The upgrade aims to ease pressure on Patna Junction and cater to rapidly increasing passenger traffic in north and south Bihar, officials said.According to Danapur senior divisional commercial manager Abhinav Siddarth, Patliputra Junction was included under ABSS after the Railway Board launched the scheme in 2024 to modernise key stations across the country.
The redevelopment is expected to improve passenger amenities and strengthen railway infrastructure.Over the past few years, Patliputra Junction has emerged as an important regional connectivity point. Currently, the station handles 33 pairs of mail and express trains and 10 pairs of passenger trains daily. With five platforms, it caters to a daily footfall of around 22,000 passengers. From a revenue perspective, the station performs strongly, generating about Rs31.26 lakh per day from the passenger reservation system (PRS) and Rs7.58 lakh from the unreserved ticketing system (UTS), Siddarth said.Sources said the Danapur division currently maintains seven Vande Bharat Express trains, while the new complex will have the capacity to service 10 more trains in the future. The redevelopment is expected to transform Patliputra Junction into a world-class station by 2027.
