Bengaluru:Red Hat is sharpening its global engineering footprint, doubling down on a location strategy that prioritises a few key hubs—including India—as it looks to accelerate product development and improve collaboration. In April, Red Hat informed employees that it will cease engineering activities in China, shifting much of that work to Asia-Pacific hubs. The move is aimed at creating integrated regional centres capable of handling end-to-end responsibilities across the product lifecycle, including architecture, design, development, quality and maintenance.India has emerged as a central pillar of this shift. “India has been identified as a key APAC engineering hub,” the company said, adding that “a strong hub strategy allows Red Hat to streamline operations, enhance collaboration, and improve product delivery timelines while supporting global customers.”The company emphasised that this is not a reduction in overall headcount. Instead, it is expanding its presence in APAC hubs, particularly in India, to support long-term growth. Work currently handled in China will transition primarily to teams in India and other aligned locations.Employees in China were notified of the changes on April 9, with transition plans to follow. The memo said, “All engineering roles in China, except some in Chris Wright’s (Red Hat CTO) organization and select support roles. An email sent to Red Hat didn’t elicit a response till press time The company said affected staff will receive support aligned with local regulations, including career coaching, internal job opportunities within Red Hat and IBM, and access to wellbeing programmes.
The changes are limited to engineering roles. Sales, services, product and marketing teams in China and Hong Kong will continue operations, ensuring no disruption to customers or partner relationships. Red Hat also said its engagement with open-source communities in China will remain unchanged.
