'Summer in Bethlehem' deleted scene: Mohanlal’s alternate climax released after 28 years

A deleted nine-minute scene from the 1998 Malayalam hit ‘Summer in Bethlehem’ has surfaced after 28 years. The sequence explores Amy’s family convincing her to marry Dennis after Niranjan’s death sentence. Director Sibi Malayil explained the scenes were cut to maintain suspense and pacing, with producer Siyad Koker deeming them unnecessary for the audience’s comfort.

‘Summer in Bethlehem’ is surely one of the evergreen romantic drama films in Mollywood. The film stars Jayaram, Suresh Gopi, Manju Warrier, Kalabhavan Mani and Mohanlal in pivotal roles.

Now the makers have now released a deleted scene from ‘Summer in Bethlehem’ after 28 years. The nine-minute sequence was shared through the Siyad Koker Entertainments YouTube channel.

What the scene reveals?

The deleted portion focuses on events after Niranjan, played by Mohanlal, is sentenced to death. It shows Amy and Dennis returning home after meeting Niranjan in jail. The family then tries to convince Amy, played by Manju Warrier, to continue her marriage with Dennis, played by Suresh Gopi.

Before his death, Niranjan insists that Abhirami tie the mangalsutra to Dennis. After the final meeting, Dennis explains everything to Amy’s family and even offers to remove the thali.

However, Jayaram’s character and others oppose this. Eventually, Amy agrees to move forward. In a dream-like sequence, Niranjan appears again and encourages her to live her life with Dennis.

Why were the scenes removed?

As reported by Manorama Online, director Sibi Malayil had earlier explained the reason for cutting these scenes.

They were originally shot to make the sudden marriage more logical.

Speaking about it, he said, “We kept Mohanlal’s role a secret until the film released in theatres—it was meant to be a surprise, and it worked really well. There was another secret too—we had shot two scenes that were later deleted. After Manju’s character ties the thali, there was a long scene where the family tries to convince her. Logically, it raises the question of how someone deeply in love could suddenly accept marrying another person.

So we shot a 10-minute sequence addressing that, including a moment where Mohanlal appears again.”He added, “But after watching the film on the first day, Siyad called me and said the scene wasn’t necessary. He felt audiences might get uncomfortable—once they realize Mohanlal’s character dies, they might not stay in the theatre. Also, such a long scene might not work at that point. He suggested cutting it in one theatre first and seeing the response.”Further explaining, he said, “After Niranjan ties the thali and collapses, the next scene shows Manju smiling at a railway station. We thought it might feel like a jump cut, but Siyad said it worked fine. I tried to include the deleted scenes in a newer version, but couldn’t find a good negative. Otherwise, it would have been a surprise addition to the film.”

Fans react to the new version

Following the release, viewers have shared mixed reactions online.

Some feel the deleted scenes add emotional depth to Niranjan’s character. Others believe they disrupt the film’s tone. One user wrote, “This scene wasn’t needed. And about that suspense—everyone wishes that the person behind the cat would be Sangeetha. I feel the same.”Another commented, “Brilliant job in editing away this unnecessary scene. Kudos to the editor.” One emotional reaction stated, “It feels like seeing what a loved one who passed away is doing in heaven… I actually had this doubt back when the film released, especially after seeing Mohanlal in a red dress in some posters.”Another viewer added, “Over drama …. brilliant choice by the editor… for cutting it out …”‘Summer in Bethlehem’ remains one of the most loved Malayalam films. Directed by Sibi Malayil and written by Ranjith, the movie recently had a re-release and it was also well received by the audiences.
