Airports are not often associated with fun (or are they?). It doesn’t matter whether you consider airports to be such – the majority of things happening there involve queuing up, going through security checkpoints, and hurrying to catch your flight.

However, currently, Hong Kong International Airport provides its visitors with an unexpectedly amusing experience in the form of an enormous interactive cat.Running from 3 April to 2 May 2026, A Moment to Purr is part of the airport’s Easter celebrations. This event, as its name suggests, allows people to relax and have some fun by taking part in a cat-related activity in the arrivals zone. Although the cat is immovable itself, its eyes react to passengers in a lifelike manner.

The uniqueness of the artwork, however, lies not only in its dimensions, but in the interactivity. People may interact with the cat via a digital interface, which allows selecting certain activities such as “feeding” or “playing.” As a result, the cat responds to these actions with minute yet meaningful movements, such as ear twitching, stretching, or closing eyes with satisfaction. It’s not an advanced robotic cat freely walking around the terminal, it’s a design installation that brings a sense of personality into the space.

This is precisely what makes it so effective. Indeed, after a lengthy flight or a series of stressful travel-related procedures, any contact with the cat is both relaxing and joyful.

Is this the most photogenic stop at the airport?

It goes without saying that the giant cat has very rapidly earned a reputation as one of the most photographed attractions at the airport. Passengers are making a point of taking a break from their journeys to take photos of themselves and others next to the large feline figure.

As mentioned above, the sculpture is yet another element of efforts on the part of the authorities to turn the airport into a tourist attraction. With time, more and more destinations around the world will start holding various themed events to keep passengers entertained. A Moment to Purr falls precisely into this category. It is not very complex, rather fun and, to be frank, slightly quirky. However, at times, that is exactly what people need to make them cherish an otherwise regular trip.Ultimately, the giant cat is an interesting example of how airports can try and reinvent themselves in order to change passenger perceptions of air travel and turn them into memorable experiences. So if you happen to pass through Hong Kong before early May, don’t rush through arrivals. Look around, you might just find yourself sharing a quiet, unexpected moment… with a very large, very relaxed cat.
