Spring in Tokyo usually brings to mind serene cherry blossoms and quiet strolls. But on April 6, the Roppongi Hills Arena traded that quiet beauty for loud, unapologetic high fashion.
Miranda Priestly and Andy Sachs are finally back. Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway crashed the Japanese capital for a massive global fan event, officially kicking off the press tour for the highly anticipated The Devil Wears Prada 2. Thousands of fans gathered to witness the long-awaited reunion. The duo officially launched the festivities by signing a giant prop stiletto right there on stage. What else would you expect from the queens of Runway?A Runway or a “Hideous Skirt Convention”? You simply cannot have a Prada reunion without thoroughly dissecting the outfits.
Staying fiercely true to the franchise’s roots, the actresses’ looks were the absolute center of attention. The sartorial choices were straight off the runway, and naturally, the internet had plenty of thoughts. It was a completely polarizing display. Some fans lived for the vibrant, avant-garde vibes the actresses brought to the stage.
Others were far less forgiving, taking to social media to jokingly label the event a “hideous skirt convention.”

Anne Hathaway, styled by Erin Walsh, showed up in a black-and-white Maison Valentino Haute Couture piece dubbed the “Specula Mundi.” Picture a sleek black top, a striking red bodice accent, and a dramatic cascade of ivory ruffles making up the skirt. Paired with blunt bangs, a sharp high ponytail, Valentino Garavani Rockstud pumps, and blinding Bvlgari diamonds, she looked every bit the elevated, modern Andy Sachs.
Then there was Meryl.

Styled by Micaela Erlanger, Streep skipped the traditional safe route. She wore an all-red Chanel Métiers d’Art pre-fall 2026 ensemble designed by Matthieu Blazy. The bold red coat and midi skirt featured graphic white splotches and long black fringes. If the colors feel somewhat familiar, they absolutely should. It was a very deliberate, genius nod to the iconic blood-red stiletto from the original 2006 movie poster.
Groundbreaking? Actually, yes. Spilling the Sequel Tea Beyond the fashion critique, the duo dropped some major hints about what to expect when the film hits theaters worldwide on May 1, 2026. Hathaway confessed her very first reaction to the sequel pitch was a simple question. “Did Meryl read it yet? What did she think?” Once she found out Streep was already on board and completely loved the script, Hathaway finally read it herself. She noted that writer Aline Brosh McKenna’s new story pushes way past anything she had anticipated over the last twenty years.

So, where does the story actually take us? The sequel dives headfirst into the messy decline of traditional print media. Miranda is fighting tooth and nail to keep Runway magazine afloat in a ruthless, digital-first world. To navigate the impending crisis, she pulls Andy back into the fold, this time as a features editor. Meanwhile, Emily (Emily Blunt) has clawed her way up the corporate ladder to become a highly powerful executive at a luxury brand.
Add director David Frankel and the beloved Stanley Tucci back into the mix, and the nostalgia is complete. The movie will even feature a brand new original anthem titled “Runway,” performed by Lady Gaga and Doechii. KJo’s Ultimate Fanboy Moment The magic in Tokyo wasn’t just reserved for the international press. Indian filmmaker Karan Johar was right there at the event, and he completely lost his cool. Taking to social media, the director shared a viral fanboy moment that felt incredibly relatable. Johar admitted to his followers that he has watched the original movie a staggering 47 times. Meeting Streep and Hathaway in the flesh? He confessed his “knees were rattling.
” With less than a month to go before the May release, the hype train has officially left the station. Gird your loins.
